MUSIC & MEMORY.   The Alzheimer's Support Network is a certified Music & Memory site.

What is Music & Memory?   How can it help you?   How can you help?

WHAT IS MUIC & MEMORY?  Dan Cohen is the founder and CEO of Music & Memory: https://musicandmemory.org/

Music & Memory, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, is devoted to improving the lives of those with dementia through the power of personalized music.  The Alzheimer’s Support Network is one of only 31 certified Music & Memory sites in the state of Florida.

HOW CAN IT HELP YOU?   There are numerous articles, research, and studies that show the power of music to reduce agitation and anxiety https://musicandmemory.org/music-brain-resources/current-research/    Music can also be a motivating and energizing force.  When words are lost to someone with Alzheimer’s, music is often remembered.

Through this program, we have seen how music can lessen agitation, provide positive engagement, relive stress, and even help stabilize sleep patterns.

The Alzheimer’s Support Network partners with any family caregiver of an Alzheimer’s patient looking to bring the powerful tool of music into their lives.   We provide personalized music, ipods, and caregiver/patient education.   We guide you through each step of this process.

WHAT DOES IT COST?   Like all of the programs and services offered by the Alzheimer’s Support Network, there is no charge for this service.  We will work with you and the equipment you already have to help you get the most out it.  If you do not have any equipment, we will work to provide it for you.

Interview with Dan Cohen, Founder of Music and Memory (from May 14, 2014)

Mr. Cohen talks about what motivated him to start the program, how it works, and exciting research in the field.

Putting Headphones on a Dementia Patient

In this video we discuss what works and what should be avoided when attempting to put headphones on a dementia patient.

Please note:  This video does not endeavor to address the difference between dementias nor their stages.  These are important considerations that will addressed in future videos.

We could not offer this program without the expertise and supervision of  Tony Termotto, who is volunteering his time as Program Manager.   Tony not only donated his computer for this project, he has spent countless hours establishing our library of music and instituting procedures to allow this program to function.  In addition, we thank Karen Bonnell for her help in furthering these efforts.
